FON Records in Sheffield was a leading rap and contemporary Black American music shop in the 1980s. With the rise of house and techno music, employees Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell decided to turn the back room of the FON Records shop into a studio. They started releasing music through the Warp Records label, and ultimately changed FON’s name to Warp Records. The Warp label is still popular today.
