Soul City was established on Deptford High Street in 1966 by Dave Godin, David Nathan and Robert Blackmore. Soul City ultimately moved premises to 17 Monmouth Street in central London, and became a hub for American R&B music in the UK. Dave Godin is credited with coining the phrase ‘Northern Soul’, as he noted that customers from the north of England tended to request more up tempo records than locals.
